Trauma happens rather easily and that's normal. We are born to love, to feel secure in loving bonds and part of our family and community. Yet we live in a society that encourages the opposite - total self reliance, total independence and emotional toughness. All that would be excellent if you were born as a mountain lion, but you weren't... you are human and humans are a social herd animal that feels great stress when alone or out of step with others. Typically leadership was by elders who had learned enough emotional maturity to tolerate well this "standing out" role, the being apart from the group and one of them too. Human societies discouraged competition and encouraged cooperation, again, because we aren't mountain lions. So we live in societies that induce trauma as part of education, that induces competition, emotional indifference and cruelty of varying severity. This is why we speak of love. This is why our creator speaks of love. Love and cooperation are opposite to emotional indifference and competition. It really is that simple.
Much trauma begins its resolution in the dreams, perhaps we call them nightmares quite aptly. Yet when one welcomes them as stories, when one learns how to read visual metaphors and puns, the messages are profound and can really tell you about your own emotional health and what you need.
The impacts of a kind moment vs one of emotional indifference are opposites, for one helps to build a well functioning brain and body, the other harms both. Adverse experiences, especially in childhood, add up. The good news is that we can heal ourselves with counselling, with exercise, with good food and positive attitudes. In this healing of the self we begin to heal others, we begin to become a part of the solution and make the world a place fit for all. So take trauma seriously so you can take the solutions seriously too... because you're worth it.
Trauma can happen so fast yet it can linger on and on until there is a chance for real healing and a real resolution. It impacts the health of both body and brain, raising the chances of ill health in both - all linked by cortisol, the stress hormone. What makes things better, the best and proven route, is talk therapy. It is feeling truly heard and letting the toxins out. Then you can move onward with confidence into your future and gain the life you have been dreaming of, the one you have been working toward.
