The horses love the fields, the space to roam and play, so we make the stables as nice as we possibly can. A good place for them to come and be cared for.
The stables were a place of calm, of the kind fo work that feels therapeutic. I'm not saying it wasn't smelly. It was. There were patches of urine and dung to remove. There were days the entire stable needed digging out and replacing with fresh bedding. We washed and replenished their water. We filled their hay nets. It was our hotel for the horses and we intended to treat our equine guests well.
When the farm was busy in the summer months we slept in the stables so that others could take our beds. A sleeping bag, some straw and a few good friends... it was a kind of camping I guess.
