In that shattered window is an opportunity to remodel, to preserve the character of our home yet open up the view, to feel more at one with the nature around us.
Between the smashing of the window and the replacement of the glass, there is a brief exchange between our home and the world outside. It is as if for those moments we are more aware of what our home is and that we share this land, this environment. That feeling of seclusion, of separateness to the trees, birds and rain, could easily give way to a sense of closeness and shared life.
The shattered glass lay upon the floor as if awaiting a century of ocean waves to make those sharp edges smooth. We had them swept up in a jiffy and a new window in before noon.
It was the most innocent of window shatterings, and even then we realised that it would become a favourite memory.
