In a small town such as theirs, there was no secret valentines. Only a master of disguise could have kept their true feelings from the observant elders. Everyone knew everything, often times before they knew the extent of their devotions themselves.
She thought of sending him a secret valentine, of sealing it with a kiss, yet her pride would let her do no less than sign it with her name. He either loved her back or he didn't, and either way she was better off knowing the truth. She had made this man the centre of her romantic fantasies, was she the centre of his? Or a fun distraction he could easily replace. Time to find out.
Polly never appreciated the secret valentines. She thought them silly. "If he won't tell the world he loves me, if he won't do it in the open, then how am I ever to trust a sentiment like that?"
"I'm not sure," said Sandra, in a peevish tone, "if there is anything quite so stupid or annoying as a secret valentine. If they don't have the balls to tell me that they love me then they aren't suitable are they? Who needs some wimpy boyfriend too scared to declare his love? Honestly! It would be better if they kept their anonymous sentiments to themselves." And with that she threw the card into the recycling bin and left the room.
