Once I met a mother and a father, both mixed race, of their four children two were white and two were black; thus we need a more nuanced way of speaking of race that is not reduced to skin colour.
Race in terms of biological science is a manmade construct, for we are all too genetically similar for the term to be applied to humanity. Yet if we look through the lens of culture and tribal origins, then perhaps we can use the word in a special sense that is different from mainstream science - words are, after all, man-created and so we can do with them as we wish. That said, some call certain groups a "race" from a position of ignorance as to their deep history and origins. Many with the same skin colour regard themselves as different ethnicities. Then there are many of mixed ethnicity, with strong affinities to multiple "races." And here is why so many are deeply offended, they are all individuals, all born as babies without the sins of their forefathers, or even people who they are not related to yet shared the same colour skin. Thus, we need to talk in a nuanced way, a way that takes full account of historical disadvantages of races and ethnicities that have led to increased poverty and disadvantage - to talk of real ways to lift all into a good standard of living. Additionally, we need to move away from the basic binary approach of our current era and learn to speak in paragraphs rather than sound bites. We need to relearn the art of true oratory, to speak in ways that show heart and logic, to show our will and determination to move forwards as one species that believes in equity, love, compassion and kindness.
