Whatever is outside of that docile flow my fish? Whatever is in the other direction to the current? Could it be something better? Would you risk the nets to discover if heroes truly live forever?
There is no need to control the population directly, just manipulate their role models; kill off anyone who challenges and reward those who take the money. Slaughter the heroes, praise the smooth talking villains. After all, everyone looks out for number one, there's not a whole lot wrong with that, is there?
To learn from our heroes at their best is wisdom; to learn from and forgive their errors when afraid or in need is wisdom; otherwise the sewer thinkers will kill them all in life and in memory and thus condemn us all ever onward to eternal darkness, celebrating greed, and emotionally indifferent to death, starvation and cruelty.

Killing heroes is what they do. Just feeling cross is enough motivation for them to drive nails through their opposition, not much has changed, eh?

We are so enthralled to find a speck of light in the dark and so outraged to find a speck of dark in otherwise perfect light, that we praise the former and kill the later. It is so very infantile to allow these basic emotions to bring us to praise the monster and kill the hero.
