What if we had a public "internet" system that worked in a similar way to Bluetooth that is free for all ages to access and restrict the regular internet the way we do with cigarettes? This way devices owned or used by children can have a clean "internet" that to them appears to be the same as what the adults have. Can we engineer a blank slate and then add content that promotes good mental health and positive education for kids whilst preserving freedom of speech?
If you feel as if it's challenging to stay private with an online connection, reach out to a real life connection you trust or a counsellor. Love yourself enough to stay safe. Chances are that your real life connections have waned and your biological need for connection is pushing you in the wrong direction.
Internet safety is a must. That person you've been chatting too... the one who is so very understanding and nice... the one who is your age and gender... could be some weirdo who is neither. So, as much as it can feel awkward to keep your identity a secret, especially if you are a child, youth or young adult, keep everything real to yourself. If anyone asks for a photograph, on snapchat or other app, you must say no. Whatever is sent can be screen grabbed or photographed. Whatever you think will be destroyed can be kept and used against you... there are always ways. So... internet safety 101 is be paranoid online. Remember to be trusting with real life friends and family, otherwise these attitudes can spill over where they shouldn't.
