We can't go on using "hysterical" in the context of funniness and crying. For the brain will ping both and bring the emotional coldness often associated with "hysterical laughter" to the SOS that is "hysterical crying." Brain chemistry alters behavioural responses. We know this. Words matter.
The word "hysterical" in association with sadness has long been said with emotional indifference and coldness, and thus when the person in distress needs love the most, they are cut off.
To call crying "hysterical" smacks of patriarchy, for no matter if the crying one (or the one responding) is male or female, the undertone that reviles such vulnerability apparent. And this is how we still carry these toxic elements of culture, and in realising this there is a chance for a better future for us all.
There is something so very wrong when we call crying "hysterical." There is something cold and judgemental where true warmth and empathy is required. To cry so much, to be processing so much pain, is a time for unconditional love.
