We need a two month festive period, we do. So from October 31st to December 26th, we give you... ta ta ta ta ta daaaaaaah..... Chrallowmas!! Use your Christmas lights at Halloween and your Halloween decorations are good until Boxing day. Smush! Costumes and candy for both! Yip yipeee yay yay!
In the decorations was our resurgent joy, that sense of uplift that came of being around one another in the holidays.
The notion that one should travel a long way to have fun and relax was always a commercial lie.
The plastic dolls sat with puckered lips upon the cold shelves, and to Vera's eternal joy, this year, they stayed there and no post-holiday sale could move them.
This holidays, let us not funnel money into the pockets of polluting industries and instead choose to save our beautiful Earth.
The holiday sales flyer was caught between the sharp teeth of the railing and the stone wall.
The holidays should be about relaxing, which is impossible if there are a thousand invisible hoops to jump through made by cunning advertisements. Fail to jump one and someone is angry with you... so we agreed to ignore it all and invent our own stupidly fun traditions.
The holidays became better when we made it ourselves. We cooked what we loved and did what we wanted. We made up our own special family traditions that really honoured who we were and what we love. It was as if we took of all the decorations and instead wondered at the beauty of the tree. That simplicity rooted us into our humanity, and in this world of tainted money, its what we needed, to purge those shrill and greedy voices.
This holidays we choose to give one another not concealed consumptive guilt, but real love, the sort that opens hearts.
The holidays were about being together, we stopped the commercial gifts thing. We did what made us feel whole and renamed them whole-i-days. The focus was on how we all were as individuals and as a family. It was about community and having the will to see the real state of the world and the work that needed doing for others. It felt right. No more holey-days.
