Food security is about more than calories, it's about the quality of the food too, the nutrient density. We need to talk "nutrient starvation" and this applies to much of the global poor.
How much could we achieve for global food security and the eradication of hunger and malnutrition through a well coordinated boosting of the most environmentally friendly "cold chain" food transport and storage techniques?
For food security keep your focus on plant pathogens, on water tables, on soil quality, on the health of insect pollinators and on the soil in terms of living and non-living parts. Innovate with technology that preserves the health of the land, increases crop yields, reduces crop losses, retains genetic diversity of crops, gives power to local farmers to breed their locally adapted cultivars and keep seed, to return health to poor soils and to ramp up production via modern soil-free horticultural techniques. To feed the world in a way that preserves nature for both future generations and for the sake of creation itself, is a profound act of love and wisdom.
Food security is vital to the entire globe, and so we need to give special attention and support to the farmers of "bread basket" regions, those whom supply the bulk of world calories. They are the stars of this third rock from the sun, without whom none of the rest of us can survive.
"In this pandemic," said Clara, "it is time to start talking seriously about the conservation and utilisation of plant genetic resources in relation to food security. We can't keep on letting the money-market determine the strategies of seed companies, especially in relation to their 'terminator seeds.' If we had arrived on Earth from some other planet and started devising a food security plan, it would certainly bare no resemblance to what we have now. And then we add in climate change, of new weather patterns changing the diseases our farmers face... we can act together now, or starve tomorrow. I'm voting for food security, how about you?"
