In our school system kids stay together their entire educational career, thus they become a family and they don't bully. Everyone in our room is one of us and we learn both the ability to care and the duty of protection as part of our education. So on this first day of school he becomes part of a new "tribe" that will become the cocoon he needs to emerge into the world as a confident butterfly, one who changes the world for the better with each simple beat of his wings.
On this first day of school the children of her new class make a welcoming archway, linking their fingers to form a tunnel of smiles.
On this first day of school she goes to meet her other family, the one she will spend years learning with. She will gain new brothers and sisters from various walks of life. She will become part of our community and begin that journey of growing into the fine lady she is destined to become.
"We have a community school system that's similar to homeschool in that we educate siblings together, but different in that the teacher is a professional. Each pod is a one room 'school house" of sorts, and often the teachers are in male-female pairings to give the 'mom and pop' feel to their days. It works real well for the kids, much better than big schools in so many ways. For starters, the older kids in time learn parenting skills by helping the younger kids, by becoming carers too. So, on this first day of school it is much the same emotions for the kids as welcoming a new sibling to their family. We gather in what was once a cafe. We eat together, laugh together, learn together and become an extension of the family. Thus if anything happens in their family the school is capable of becoming a shock-absorber and maintaining their wellbeing far better than the big schools."
