Easter Sunday we'd be at the pier, Matt and me, skipping stones and eating whatever takeaway he'd bought on the way there. If it was sunny we'd enjoy those golden rays. I'd lean back and bask in them, listening to those long and winding yarns he would tell. He was the best tall story teller in town. If it was raining we'd put up one of those fishing umbrellas and enjoy the soothing sound, watching the droplets make their splashy entrance into the lake. So mesmerising. Plus there was the obligatory chocolate eggs, of course. Perhaps we over indulged a tad. It didn't matter what else was going on in the world that day, in my world on Easter Sunday it was only the two of us. We had the lake and each other; we had nature and whatever the spring weather wanted to do was aye-ok.
Easter Sunday in the flat was much the same as any other day. Mom was working as usual because those days paid more. We sat there no different than if it was halloween, binging candy and tv shows. Sleeping in usually got cut short by the church bells, so eager to ring, to tell us that Jesus had risen... so where was He? Was he going to walk down the street? Was he going to help Mom be with us instead of working all the time to put food on the table and pay rent? I dunno. I'd love to believe it all. I would. But if love is just all singing and no practical help when the big bad wolf is at your door, huffing and puffing because your poor... then I can't have the energy for it. What's on tv?
Easter Sunday arrived upon the warming spring air as easily as the aroma of the blossoms. The trees were as giant opening carnations, as if they were heaven's own blooms, large enough to see from the skies. Yet the daffodils, those earthly trumpets of gold, they were for my heart and fingertips. Lain in the grass, my head on that green pillow, they became the most joyous of company, dancing to that silent song nature sings to all creation.
When Easter Sunday and my birthday were on the same day, it felt as if I'd hit the jackpot. That small element of chance made it so much fun.
