The spy is a sort of Sherlock Holmes more than a James Bond, yet perhaps a mixture of the two regardless of the gender of the operative.
It takes a strange person to become a spy. I am strange though. I realise that because normal people are strange to me. I find them charming yet stupid and, almost always, completely two-faced, how can they not be when they haven't even begun to conquer themselves, to see the "Two Wolves" as the Cherokee legend tells it. I guess being so different leaves you no option. You are alone if you are a spy or not. Who else could ever be with such a person?
I've seen the spies, the paranoid freaks, they couldn't blend into any place normal if their lives depended in it.
There's a reason Bond never bonded to anyone, why the character is such a misogynist - being a spy damages you. Love and relationships take real trust, what does the spy become? Is there any reverse gear on that road to full autonomy and a life without normal human dependancies?
Being a spy is being alone and leaning how to make fear nothing at all. When fear is gone, focus remains and you become more than others can become. It is a sacrifice none of those movies ever capture. Glamour is fake. It's all forms of pain. In reality, to become a thing others are not, you are doing things other's aren't. Spies are only normal to other spies.
