The AI in the autonomous cars was actually a fabulous counsellor, indeed, you could quite forget it wasn't human. It felt good to vent, to get rid of stress in a way that was safe. In days gone by people would have gossiped I guess, now we just talk it out on the way home with the car. The release of the AI counsellors came with a measurable decrease in stress and its negative effects in society. Ironically, the machines were teaching us how to become more human, how to grow and maintain our empathy and emotional intelligence.
The autonomous cars were more akin to a comfortable living room on wheels, one in which the chairs became beds. There was simply no need for the old fashioned interiors. In the case of an emergency the car would deploy both airbags and tendril restraints. The "tendrils" were soft yet strong "ropes" of sorts that kept everyone still and safe. There weren't any seat belts, the tendrils were actually safer because the computer sent them to the exact right point on each person taking their height, weight and dimensions into account.
The self drive fleet was in almost constant motion, gone were the cars that sat idly in driveways for most of their lifetimes, these cars worked far harder and lasted longer. When you need far fewer, quality becomes easier to achieve and access for all is simple.
We'd had autonomous vehicles for so long that the idea of driving felt ridiculous. They were transport you called from an app and then left once you'd arrived. There was a cleaning service, so that if you'd accidentally made a mess you'd tell the car to go the detailers before its next job. The detailers were robots too. Cars, food, energy, clothes... they were just tasks we took on as a society and we all had free use of. It's like humanity became one big buyers club until the idea of money fell out of fashion, like chimney sweeps and coal fires.
