Sobering words have the ring of sobriety; they come from the brain that is giving a response based in both logic and empathy rather than the jangle of the primitive mind.

When society is afraid the higher brain takes a forced-siesta and the primitive brain takes over - and this is much the same effect as being drunk. And so sobering words come from those who can distance themselves from fear long enough to reawaken their higher brain and give a well reasoned and empathy response. For it is then we hear sobering words.
