Those nylon stockings that hark to notions of romance, of a sort of feminine beauty that is also wonderfully feminist, are a massive source of pollution from their construction to their near "single use" disposability. Yet we still love the look of such hosiery. For now, most eco-friendly alternatives are too expensive for the masses, so perhaps the responsible thing to do is promote the sort of tight fitting leg coverings that last a long time - such as sports leggings or woollen tights.
The hosiery once strangled the air, casually and wilfully ignorant of its pollution; yet with new durable options the nylon look can become one of casual enlightened awareness - and all the more sexy for it.
A skirt over tight sports leggings was both sexy and cute, that perfect middle ground between a sense of adventure and shyness, between confidence and modesty.
