The state our country was in, it was time to make Christmas hampers for everyone who otherwise wouldn't get a good meal that day. I can't imagine sitting through December the 31st Old Mother Hubbard style.

A Christmas hamper was the way we did Christmas dinner. Instead of all that fuss, all that difficult cooking and so much cleaning, we made it on Christmas Eve. We baked and made everything we wanted that could be eaten cold and tucked it in a big cardboard box or crate. The next day we'd grab our "hamper" with a couple of bottles of wine and go someplace pretty with friends and family and have a relaxed feast. We'd dance, we'd sing... it really was a merry ol' Christmas day.

Nana was passed the days when she could cook up the wonders she once did, and she was passed the age when travelling to us was a good idea, and so we made her a Christmas hamper. We cooked her favourites and packed enough for everyone to share and headed on over to her place.

I always thought a Christmas hamper was something you bought online, but the homemade version is so much better, basket or not.
